Buying a sewing machine - a checklist
So you have decided to buy a sewing machine. If this is your first machine, or the first machine you have bought for a long time, then you might appreciate some help with formulating a list of questions and considerations.
1. What is your skill level? If you are a beginner, there is no point in paying for a lot of features that you won't use. It's best to spend your money on a good, solid, basic model that you can learn on. You can always upgrade later.
2. What do you need it for? List the accessories and features that you would like the machine to have.
3. Check out the service and spares support. Is there a local centre?
4. How long is the guarantee?
5. Do you want a portable or fixed machine?
6. Check the machine details such as how straightforward it is to thread the needle and bobbin. Do the features include double-needle and double-thread use? Are the tension and length settings easy to adjust?
7. Are the controls ergonomic? Will there be any strain on your knees, feet, ankles or arms?
